My top 5 favorite Shonen Mangas/Animes...

Shonen is arguably the most popular genre of Anime/Manga in Japan (and possibly of all the world), There's many different genres that go with Shonen Manga, From fighting, to sports, to gag animes/mangas. It's my favorite Genre, at least from the 1980s-ish? to the 1990s, and maybe part of the 2000s. I decided to do this little list to show you some of my favorites. What counts as a Shonen manga? That's hard to describe, because There's so much Genres, levels of violence, and types of humor (which is also part of the genre), the way I see it is two requirements:

  1. Too simple to be aimed at older audiences (Seinen), yet too complex for young children (Kodomo). It's generally aimed at Older Kids, Tweens, and high school aged kids.
  2. And a Person (age, gender, and race don't usually matter) completing a certain goal (whether it'd be be the best in a certain field of their life (fighting in tournaments, sports, etc)), or to get through day to day life with hilarious and surreal scenarios.

With that out of the way, (In order to 5th favorite to Most Favorite) Here are some of my favorites...

Debate and discussion are welcome, just keep it civil, in fact, I'd love to hear your favorites...

HOYOYO... Here's the #5 spot: DR. SLUMP:

I don't know about you guys... But I kind of like this better than Dragon Ball. My blog from a couple months ago didn't do it justice. You need to read this to understand it. Basically it starts out simple, but it gets more serious with bigger stories, longer arcs. and its got various types of humor, some you'll get if you're way deep into J-Pop culture. Read my blog for more info o this really great manga/anime series.

YOU HUNGRY? BECAUSE I AM!!!! THE #4 SPOT GOES TO...

Toriko kind of like the 80s and 90s all over again. It recalls a time when Shonen anime/mangas were about pure fun rather that Bishonens going across the world.. It's fist of the North Star for a new generation. It involves a preposterous amount of testosterone fueled Man named Toriko looking all around the world for the best ingredients for the best Meals he can make. He has loads of Preposterone, He Drinks PowerThirst, Side effects include Glowing sweats, He can use his sweaty body to fuel SWEET RAVE PARTIES!!!! Also this has loads of Illlustations of food. This series will make you HUNGRY just thinking about it. It's my favorite Modern Shonen besides...

IT'S TIME TO D-D-D-D-DUEL!!!!! THE #3 SPOT GOES TO:

CORN IN MY MOUTH, MOE'S SOUP MACHINE, NARUTO CAN'T HANG, EVEN THOUGH THEIR KEEN!!!! Yep I like Yu-Gi-Oh! Yes I know the dub wasn't that great (even though I do have nostalgic feelings towards it), Yes I know it was Goofy, but It ain't no Children's show, It's got horror/suspense elements, Mythological elements, and gambling elements. It's crazy and you really need to watch the uncut version of the anime or the Manga. What's it about Yugi Muto puts together the Millenium Puzzle and sells his soul by playing Children's Card Games. It's more surreal than that and go original version or go home. THE SEQUELS SUCK!!!!!

BIO BOOST!!!! HERE COMES THE #2 SLOT:

I already Discussed this a little in my Guyver Anime Review... but You really need to see this Manga. It's got drama, masked heroes. Tokusatsu-esque action, Gritty Violence. It goes away from it's roots and becomes a sick twisted story that's just so good... Basically the story goes like this... Sho Fukamtchi gets an alien symbiote that turns him into the Guyver, He's one of three of them, he fights against Chronos, makes and loses friends along the way, and fights against monsters like in Power Rangers or Kamen Rider. The series has been going on non stop for almost 30 years.

GO GO MUSCLE!!!!!! THE BIG ONE, HEAD HONCHO, THE BEST MANGA OF ALL TIME, THE #1 SLOT GOES TO... HONORABLE MENTIONS FIRST:

Saint Seiya
Dragon Ball
Dragon Quest: Adventure of Dai
Ranma 1/2
YuYu Hakusho
Pokemon Adventures
Gurren Lagann
G Gundam
Slayers
Cyborg 009

I THINK YOU ALL KNOW WHAT THE FINAL SPOT IS...

You'll see this get the spotlight for the next couple of years after may, but you really need watch/read Kinnikuman... It's about a goofball wrestler and part time superhero (much like Ultraman) who Can't do anything right, but he climbs to the top as the series gets more and more serious. He eventually becomes king of his planet, and is fighting villains after a long hiatus as of 2011.

See you again.... hero...
