I think it was safe to say before (and for a lot of) 70s, The tournament arc in shonen fight manga was relatively non existent, but it was extremely prevalent in Sports manga like Hoshi no Kyojin. Sure there was fighting in manga like Ashita no Joe and Tiger Mask, but those were more sports than fighting. You could say the same for Kinnikuman, but as the series goes on, it gets more and more surreal. It becomes less and less about normal Pro Wrestling. But where did the Wrestling angle come from? Short answer the Author's (Yudetamago) passion for Wrestling. Long answer, no one, at least outside of japan, knows for sure... If anyone has any translations of the author's interview pages (you know the ones that come with every manga or even american comic book ever made), please tell me so I can confirm any info. Back to the trournament arc, Shonen fight anime like the obsure but influencial Otoko Ippiki Gaki Daisho were largely episodic, heck Tiger Mask, despite being about an overarching tournament, was largely a fight of the week series. But things would later change when japan and many other western nations decided to boycott the Moscow Olympics...
The arc begins with Kinniku Daioh landing on earth near the Kinniku Shack. He came to tell Kinnikuman that he represented him in the 20th Chojin Olympics. A cometition where superheroes from all over the world compete to be the best in events, mainly wrestling. It is revealed the former representative of Japan (Ultraman) was Injured seriously in the last Chojin Olympics. Terryman tells Japan won't be represented this year due to Ultraman being injured. OK, Japan's population was 115.9 Million in 1979 (The year this was published), and some of them might've been chojin's, so it might not've been that hard to find a representative. Mayumi tells the committee he wants Kinnikuman to compete, but Harabote thinks he'll bring shame to Japan, Remember this was before he became a well respected superhero... Harabote and Mayumi fight until...

Some of these Chojin will become permanent fixtures of the cast, some will make assorted cameos throughout the series, some will very seldom be mentioned or seen again. The actual arc begins with the Announcers being announcers. Then we get some shenanigans in the waiting room. Everyone's cheering for the Different chojin. No one's happy when Kinnikuman comes around. The Chairman welcomes the International Chojin and Kinnikuman thinks their names are stupid. This upsets the Chojin, Especially Kanibase. Robin Mask tells the Chojin to suck it up or go Home. The Chojin play RPS, and Kinnikuman Beats Kanibase who can only form scissors with his hands. Kinkotsuman and Iwao are plotting and Suguru get's cocky of his victory. Kinnikuman is upset that not many people are cheering for him and Mayumi Growing big to cheer for him... Harabote announces the second event will be Kaiju weight lifting. One of the Kaiju goes after Nakano, and we get a cameo from Kazuhiko Torishima, The editor of Weekly Shonen Jump. Who appeared or was referenced in many Shonen Jump Manga the late 70s onward (Like Dr. Slump, Dragon Ball, Bakuman, and more). He was like the Stan Lee of Shonen Jump. The Chojin lift monsters in their own special ways, with one Chojin lifting it using his balls. just go with it. Kinnikuman lifts a kaiju with some help at first, then he does it on his own and goes to the ground. He passes anyway, and The Kinkotsu gang is planning. Mayumi Gets mad at Specialman lifting a 2 ton kaiju and tries to stop him... Something's odd about how He's lifting the kaiju, so Terryman kills the Kaiju and realizes Specialman's injured. Terryman tells Kinnikuman that a lot of chojin were being smashed by the various kaiju, It was because of Kinkotsuman, Iwao, and Kanibase. Kinnikuman lifts a Kaiju Himself and is immune to Kinkotsuman's plans. He has trouble lifting but when Kinkotsuman Kicks him between the legs, he was able to lift it with ease. Suguru throws the kaiju into kinotsuman and his gang.
People are watching the Chojin Olympics on TV when they see Kinnikuman and react with Shock! Kinnikuman and Harabote get into an argument, after that, the final Preliminary is revealed to be a marathon to the moon and back. Everyone who can't fly gets a jetpack, but Suguru does't want one even though he's slow flying... Kinnikuman tries to start the race before everyone else, but when he's supposed to start, he's dead last... The Stadium's ceiling closes but not before Kinnikuman can get out. Robin mask gets his Rabbit, and Terryman's leading the pack. Kinnikuman eventually gets his rabbit, but it turns out to be a bomb by Team Kinotsuman, Robin Mask is in the lead, and 7 out of the 8 finalists are announced. Kintaman is flying in circles to tell people he's the 8th finalist, but Kinnikuman's rabbit explodes causing all the competitors to land at the same time. The chojin get into a fight. The Chairman breaks up the fight and decides to have a battle royale. Kinnikuman is ripping his speedo and goes to the bathroom. Kinkotsuman Brainwashes the other Chojin to kill Kinnikuman. Kinkotsuman ties up the referee and becomes the referee for the match. The Chojin are beating up Kinnikuman, Then Terryman finds the Mind Control Mike and tells the Chojin to beat up Kinkotsuman. The chojin Beat up each other when the Real referee comes and announcs Kinnikuman to be the 8th Finalist.
At the Chojin Olympic match up lottery A lot of people have gathered, Jump's Editor Team, Bruce Lee, people from around the world. Mayumi and Harabote get into another fight, and A woman introduces the 8 finalists, Robin Mask, Terryman, Ramenman, Brockenman, Canadianman, Curry Cook, Skyman, and of course Kinnikuman. Kinnikuman's last in line, upsetting him and the Chojins get picked their place in the bracket one by one. Kinnikuman's #7, It goes like Robin Mask VS Canadianman, Terryman VS Skyman, Brockenman VS Ramenman, and finally Kinnikuman VS Curry Cook. The prime ministers of each country get into a fight on who's going to win. Harabote announces A Block will be put in Kourakuen stadium all over the world on TV. While the B-Block with Kinnikuman will be in Kourakuen Hall and only be broadcast via radio. Kinnikuman doesn't take it that well, but Meat tells him there's a reason for it.. The Chojin get into a photo and Kinnikuman pretty much Photobombs it. The reason the B-Block will be broadcast via radio is because the Chojin there are Violent Chojin, AKA Zangyaku Chojin. Teh fight with Robin Mask and Canadianman begins. While the Ramenman/Brockenman fight will begin after a short boxing match. Over at the Stadium Fight, Canadianman grows big and lifts the entire stadium. Candadianman uses a Canadian Back Breaker when Robin Mask grows giant, but Robin Counters with a Suplex. When both Chojin grow back to normal size, Robin Mask beats Canadian man and moves on to the semifinals. Brockenman begins hsi match by covering Ramenman in his jacket. He also uses his iron knuckle and poison gas attack, Ramenman uses his martial arts and puts Brockenman in a Camel Clutch, then...
It's Official Ramenman invented the Fatality. Also wait until the anime makes it more disturbing...
Teryman Remembers His Childhood with Doryman, Because Special man tells him to stand up. He does and puts Skyamn into an Oklahoma Stampede. Terryman gets to move on to the Semifinals. Kinnikuman Getsa stabbed with Curry Cook's Spoon, and Kinnikuman breaks Curry Cook's bowl. Curry tries to find a replacement. and he uses a Gyudon Bowl, Which excites Kinnikuman and Kinnikuman goe scrazy and drinks the Milk on Curry's head, turning him into Japanese Wrestler Giant Baba.Then he turns into a female Tennis palyer and Curry Cook Forfeits realizing he can't win... Kinnikuman will be in the semi finals, but after being offered more Milk, He runs away.
The semifinals of the Chojin Olympics at the Nippon Budokan are about to begin, with Terryman and Robin Mask exiting a car to prepare for their match... When the fans come, they both fly away. Kinnikuman crashes his car when he sees a camera, and out comes Ramenman. Ramenman gives a fan an autograph proving he might not be such a bad guy after all. I think this gives him a split personality in different situations like I am sometimes, but when a reporter asks him a bunch of questions, he ends up kicking him. People are wondering why the building's so cold, and why the ring's covered up, and Kinnikuman's no allowed to wear shoes in said ring, all of this is because...

Natsuko looks for Terryman with his trail of blood. When she does reach his dressing roop, the room's dark, and she notices that his leg's bleeding. So Natsuko tries to inform the chairman, but Terry doesn't want her to... Natsuko says that battling against Robin in Terryman's condition would be pretty much suicide. Terry Pulls down Natsuko's pants and Kinnikuman sees when the whole situation is over. After that, Kinnikuman heads for the part for making it to the Finals. Terryman decides to head for the ring despite his condition. The Match is about to begin and Terry's nowhere to be found, pissing off the crowd. junk is being throw at Kinnikuman for stuff he said. Robin Mask si about to be awarded winner until Terryman comes in, but in bad condition. The officials wonder why he's still fighting, but he comes in. Terryman enters the ring, but he can't really fight that well. Terryman throws sand into Robin's face, and starts fighting dirty, With uncalled for punches, steel knuckles, and rough moves. Terry tosses Robin Mask out of the ring, Everyone's suprised how out of character he is. The Audience is mad at him. Terryman is surprised when Robin Mask get's back up... Terry's still angry so he puts Robin Mask in a spinning toe hold... He gets back in pain, and Robin uses a back drop, then a Boston Crab. Terryman's leg gets injured further and Natsuko has to enter the ring. Robin will be moving onto the finals while Terryman gets villainized by everyone. Natsuko tries to defend him, Terryman goes through another Personality switch and tells Robin and Suguru they deserve to go onto the finals. Terryman sees Kinnikuman mad at him and he wants revenge at him (an dgoing through another Mood Swing again). Seriously these past few chapters have been out of character for Terryman, mainly because he got violent and angry, but that bleeding leg might not make him think straight, still, that doesn't justify Terryman becoming a Zangyaku Chojin for a while, Also the all the civilians seem to take their wrestleing real seriously, and the way they do it comes off as just a little mean spirited in a way, but next time, we conclude the Chojin Olympics arc with Matchups including Terryman vs Ramenman, and of course Kinnikuman vs Robin Mask...
