Gaming Bits Quickie: Hyper Neogeo 64

Let's take a break from the storylines for a nit to talk about the Nintendo 64... The N64 was a 64 bit arcade board by SN... Wait, that's not right... 7 games, only 12 reference cards...

Yoshiette 1: I assume you're talking about the Hyper Neogeo 64, You Lil' Moron, Baka, Tonto, Cretin, Trottel, Stupido, I can go on if you want me to...

A. Yoshi: Up your fat robo dunghole!!!!!

This week's going to be a quick one since there's literally no info on this thing. This is a segment on the Hyper Neogeo 64!!!!!!

It was 1997, more and more games were polygon based, with the Sony Playstation, Nintendo 64, Sega Dreamcast, and the Rumored Matushita/Panasonic M2. Gaming was growing with it's audience, more and more mature games were released, but SNK was stuck with their 2D Neo Geo MVS/AES System they've been using for the better part of a decade. Their Rival Capcom was going 3D or going home, and so was Konami, Taito, Namco, and Sega. SNK Needed to adapt, so they quietly released the Hyper Neogeo 64 in 1997. It had a 64-bit RISC Processor with 4 MB of RAM and 4 MB of Program memory, 32 Channel PCM Wavetable audio, 32 MB of Wavetable RAM, 64 MB of 3D and Texture Memory, and 128 MB of 2D Object Memory. It came in 3 Main varaitions, Driving, Fighting, and Shooting. Sadly, it just wasn't up to par with machines released around the same time. Here's a side by side comparison with 2 other fighters released around the same time...

Notice the blocky characters, flat textures, and clunky looking graphics...

The Huge cartridges din't help either. You couldn't even put in more than one like you could with the MVS. It was planned to be console  but in reality, no one wanted these games, they knew it was a better idea to wait for the Katana (Dreamcast), or even the Mythical PS2. Developers moved  to the easier to program for MVS/AES, or the more powerful systems brought by companies like Capcom, Konami, Sega, Taito, and Namco. Only like 7 games were ever released for it. Those were...

Racing Games like the 4x4 Racer Round Trip RV/Road's Edge, and the Rally Racer Xtreme Rally/Off Beat Racer, Neither of which were anyone's best work.

Fighting games including inferior versions of Samurai Showdown and Fatal Fury. A stand out in this genre is Buriki One (a game showing realistic fighting and tournaments).

Another Standout Was Beast Busters 2nd Nightmare. The only Shooter for the console. Basically it was the sequel to the original Beast Busters, but feels more like a lamer House of the Dead.

AFTERMATH:

The system wasn't really well received, and SNK was stuck in a corner for pretty much until they filed for bankruptcy in 2001, and were revived as SNK Playmore not too long after. I guess not all consoles can be winners...

A Console Mystery to Shake the ages...
