Shogi is a chess variant that spans all the way to at least the Heian period. It's a japanese game where the goal is to catch the king, So his generals and soldiers have to go through his line of defense to get to the other king. It's a very different animal than western chess. It has some elements like Kings (王 or 玉) move in any direction one space, Pawns (歩) can move one space at a time forward, Rooks (飛) move Orthogonally, Bishops move Diagonally (角), but there's a lot of differences, for example The Pieces are pentgonal prisms rather than 3 dimensional, Knights (桂) can only move at either of the 2 points of a forward V shape. and there's only one Bishop and Rook per side, 9 Pawns per side. and there's 3 new classes, 2 Gold Generals (金) (who can move in like a king, but not diagonally backwards), 2 Silver Generals (銀) (who can move diagonally or forward one space), and 2 Lances (香) (who can move any number of spaces forward), and the biggest feature of all, you can promote pieces who move to the enemy side. For example. Rooks/Dragons can now move one space diagonally, Bishops/Horses can now move one space orthagonally, Knights can now move like Gold Generals, Lances can also now move like gold generals, and Silver Generals and Pawns/Tokin's same basic idea. King's and Gold Generals can't upgrade... As always, the first player to catch the king wins.

Here's what the board looks like...

It does have a bit of a learning curve, especially If you've played regular chess (Who hasn't?) but if you can overcome the learning curve, you can a busy and intense chess game. The game's really popular in japan with tournaments, video games for every platform since the Famicom (some even featuring real life shogi players), manga/anime series (Either revolving around or having some kind of influence by Shogi), and even versions you can play online. I wonder if there's any strip shogi video games.... Oops...
