In the Early 2000s, Mechs were the biggest thing worldwide. They were big for decades in japan, but When Gundam came to Toonami, Gunplas became big in America for a while, there was a demand for mecha anime in the west unseen in years before. We've gone from the crappy Dubs of Dangaioh, and Giant Robo to the amazing Dubs of Gundam Wing and Evangelion, along this new found demand came new games... MechaWarrior 2 was good but it was pretty slow paceed in Comparison of...
2001's Z.O.E. (Zone Of the Enders):
Inspired by the fast paced action of SEGA's Virtual On (which could be a whole segment onto itself) and the in depth and emotional story of evangelion, Konami and Hideo Kojima's Zone Of the Enders was a fast paced mech action game that uses power of the PS2, and was a damned good mecha game. The story is that a kid takes Jehuty as his own orbital frame after his space colony is being attacked, He then goes into an adventure he would've never expected, This game had flying Mech fights and the action gave us many long nights It even had a 2 player mode. This game got mostly positive reviews, for it's fat paced action, anime Influences, but the graphics looked average and the combat was repetitive. I'm just going to come out and say it, as much as I love this game better than it's sequels, it really hasn't aged well, the cutscenes look like a higher grade Dreamcast game, the camera is terrible, and it's kind of a afterthought once you play the Metal Gear Solid 2 Demo, which everyone bought the game for. Also this was an M Rated game for reasons I cannot begin to guess...
FAST FACT:
There's actually a Premium Package of the game in Japan, With the game, a soundtrack CD, an Art Book, and an OVA, Which Leads me to...
The Series was pretty successful at the time of release, With an OVA Which spawned a 26 episode anime, which it's American DVDs have been out of print for years and a spin off for the GBA, known as the Fist of Mars., a more strategy focused game that was just a hold over until the next game came out...
Zone of the Enders, The Second Runner Was much less focused on action and more on exploration, it had anime cutscenes, improved cel shaded graphics, and more abilities for Jehuty. The story is that Dingo is the new owner of Jehuty, he finds a new orbital frame, so he needs to protect it from the forces of BAHRAM. This improved on everything that made the original great, but I don't have a soft spot for it as much, I'll discuss this in later gaming bits, but I loved gaming in the mid 90s to the early 2000s for how experimental each 3D game was. as a result the games that these experimental games spawned in later years were less charming. However The game got better reviews than it's predecessor, It had faster action, more features, and got more bang for your buck.
The series would remain dormant for a decade until 2012 when the HD Collection came out for PS3 and XBOX 360, it's the recommended way to play these games, with a different look, but same great gameplay. or you could tinker with the settings on an emulator and play it on your PC, Go ahead , I'm Not Judging you, I'M NOT!!!!!!
So that was Zone Of the Enders, a short but sweet series, that will probably never get a sequel due to Konami being a actual Time Bomb at the moment...
NEXT TIME:
We're going to defend this game, next time...
