Kinnikuman Retrospective: American Tour Arc: Part 3

Continued from Part 2...

The Tournament has begun, the first match is The Emperors VS The Machineguns, and this...

Because Poor Translationz R KOOL!!!!

There's cheering from both sides, but the Machineguns side is obsessed with Terryman. Terryman tries to show sportsmanship to the Emperors, but they attack. After being beat like crazy Kinnikuman requests to be the Advance Guard, but Terryman says Kinnikuman loses his temper really easily, after that Kinnikuman loses his temper and says he doesn't have a short temper. Beauty Rhodes puts Terry into a surfboard, then Terry counters with a reverse kick, then a side suplex. The 2 advance guards tag their partners. Kinnikuman uses a shoulder buster on Steamboard. Suguru tries to pin Steamboard, but Rhodes stops on kinnikuman and he gets beaten by the 2 wrestlers after getting yelled at for saying Beauty Rhodes shouldn't be using foul play even though he didn't. Jean used a flying body attack and Kinnikuman got out at the 1 count. after tagging Terryman back into the ring, he hits Steamboard with a suplex, where Kinnikuman tries to help him, but Jean moves out of the ring somehow. Terryman uses the Manji Defense, and Kinnikuman tries to finish the duo off.but misses again and ends up hitting Terryman. The audience starts attacking Kinnikuman, then The Emperors use Rhodes' Strong Elbow attack, then a Two Platonic. Kinnikuman is used in a game of ball with him as the ball. Terry saves Kinnikuman when The Emperors use their finisher; the Deadly Drive. God Von Erich comes in, and Kinnikuman learns the concept of Teamwork in Tag Matches. after that, Kinnikuman and Terryman use a double drop kick on The Emperors while their preoccupied. The 2 tag teams fought back and forth until 50 minutes have passed. More time passes as Kinnikuman tries to get Terry to use the calf branding, even if he thinks it'll mess up his leg. The match is going in The Machine Guns favor, when time runs out and it ends in a draw... The Machineguns argue and Kinnikuman still thinks he's not stupid and he's always right, the tournament has nowhere to go for them but up, right? Well Terry gets attacked by Black Shadow, and the Rugged Brothers and The Most Evil Combo in the Universe get ready to fight. The match starts without sportsmanship, and Iwao gets tossed into the ceiling. Then this happens...

Pokemon Stadium Announcer Guy: THAT WAS BRUTAL!!!!!!!!!

The MECU tear off Black Shadow's Arms, and then use the Figure 4 Headlock to end him. He gets torn to pieces, and The Emperors get threatened by the MECU. The results are in, The MECU are in first with 2 points, The Emperors and The Machineguns are tied in second with 1 point each, and The Rugged Brothers are in 3rd with Zippity Do Da points. The Chojin head to Los Angeles for the next round. The Machineguns win by default because Black Shadow was torn to pieces. The Emperors come in and bump their truck into the WSA's bus. They get the bus back up. That is when a helicopter containing the WSF flies over them. At the hotels of each of the groups, the begin planning for the match. At the Los Angeles Olympic Stadium on the day of the match, Iwao seems to be all alone, Making Kinnikuman Arrogant, but his partner is none other than...

KINKOTSUMAN!!!!

The Rugged brothers are now the Kaiju Student/Master Combo... The Machine Guns are trapped under the lights and presumed dead. They manage to escape stronger than ever. Terryman tries to tell The KS/MC about his leg, but, Kinnikuman knocks him out. Kinnikuman decides to knock the 2 kaiju out with a Double Western Lariat, followed by Flying Neck Breaker Drop, causing a win. This match kind of puts an end to the whole Kinnikuman vs Kinkotsuman character arc, and appropriately it's a throwback to the 20th Chojin Olympic arc Fights. The second half of the round starts with the MECU entering with Beethoven's Funeral March (WHY ARE THEY CHANGING THEIR THEMES ALL OF A SUDDEN!?!?), and The Emperors entering as well. Devil Magician seems a little off this match. Steamboard uses a Side Suplex, with Magician escaping at the 1 count. Rhodes tags in and The Emperors use a double punch on Magician, followed by Rhodes using an Airplane Smash. Rhodes uses a bear hug with Steamboard throwing a beer bottle and Devil Magician catches the bottle, smashes it on Beauty's head and it turns out to be gasoline. Skull Bozu burns Beauty Rhodes' face, and Devil Magician throws a sword into Jean Steamboard's chest. The Emperors give up, but the fight's still going on with Terry entering and his leg coming off. Meat comes in, but ends up being beat up, with Kinnikuman entering being horrified of what he's seeing. The scores are in, The Machineguns have 3 points, the emperors have 1 point, the MECU have 4 points, and the KS/MC have zilch points still. At Madison Square Garden in New York A boy in a wheelchair gets ready to see the final round of the tag tournament. Everyone's rooting for the MECU, even...

That kid from Ring Ni Kakero... REFERENCES!!!!

The Machineguns arrive at new york meeting the wheelchair boy. Terryman gets ready to forfeit, but Kinnikuman refuses. The Wheelchair Boy talks to Terryman about his artificial leg he got after a car accident. The whole scene's pretty emotional, honestly it's a real cute scene. Terry gets the courage to do the match. The Match starts with The Machineguns getting Jeered at. Ramenman will be our referee, and God von Erich will be the special guest. The other Seigi Chojin come to cheer on Kinnikuman. The MECU Try to Kill the Machineguns, but Ramenman says they have to do it without weapons. Ramenman tears off Devil Magician's shoulder armor. Skull Bozu traps Terry in the ropes and uses his deadly hedgehog move. Skull Bozu's head is exposed, and Kinnikuman uses his head scissors and uses his Behind the scenes at the chicken shop technique. Terryman escapes, and Suguru uses the Drop Kick, followed by Terry using his Brain Buster. Kinnikuman uses a camel Clutch on Skull Bozu while Terryman uses the Flying Torpedo on Devil. Kinnikuman uses the Tower Bridge on Skull, then Terry uses the Spinning Toe Hold on Devil Magician. Kinkotsuman and Sheik Seijin team up and steal Terryman's leg. Robby (the Wheelchair Kid) Chases after the stolen leg, but the forces of evil try to stop him.

For The Record, I really like this picture, even if the art this arc hasn't been best thing ever material...

Terry is getting beat by a flurry of punches. Skull Bozu Throws Terryman out of the Ring. Kinnikuman is the next target. but Beauty Rhodes saves Terryman's leg. He uses the Calf Branding on Skull Bozu, and saves Kinnikuman. Terryman, the real hero of this arc... The Machineguns beat the MECU and win the Tournament. The New World Superman Association is born, Kinnikuman Gets his Buttprint on the Chojin Walk of Glory, and he heads home ending the arc...

This arc is rather story based, concentrating on the corporate side of the wrestling world, rather than being about the fighting. especially the middle of the arc. This might be the most story focused arc in the series so far. Unlike the 20th Chojin Olympics where the tournament was pretty much the story, this focuses on havinga more complex and compelling story. It's a pretty flawed approach in some areas, Kids (especially Shonen Jump's Target Demographic) don't care about the corporate world, why do you think salaryman based manga is more of a seinen thing rather than a shonen thing?, It remedies that by having the actual battle for dominance be as cartoony and unrealistic as it can get, by making it a literal war. The arc has a lot of story and the fighting is a pretty mixed bag. Some fights being amazing (Jesse Malvia), and others being meh at best (MECU VS Rugged Brothers). How's the story, it's pretty good for an early 80s Shonen Jump title, but really Fist of the North Star and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Had More Fights per chapter, and they have better stories as far as shonen titles go. I know FotNS was pretty mature for the time, but shonen manga always had mature undertones since the birth of the modern shonen in the 1950s, see key examples like Doberman Deka, Devilman, etc. Kinnikuman was aimed at young kids, but the audience was already a year older from when they started. Ahh well, it is what it is... Right? If you're wondering why I haven't talked about the art, it's pretty much the same as arc 2, exceptional in some areas, but still a ways away from last panel quality. What are the best points this arc has going for it, well the story's good for what it's worth, it provides finality for several stories that have been going on like Kinkotsuman being defeated (his time being interesting in the story is pretty much over, other than the anime, but that's getting ahead of ourselves), and Kinnikuman and Terryman are now officially friends. There's also the realism and grit of the arc, which'll pretty much slowly go away as the series goes on, and finally that last picture i Showed you.

Onto ratings, This is a tough one, while it does have a strong story FWIW, but there isn't enough fighting for my taste. Even then the fights are a mixed bag, and the story isn't as good as other Shonens, or even the future arcs like the Dream Tag Tournament arc or the Golden Mask arc. Here's my ranking so far...

  • 20th Chojin Olympics Arc
  • American Tour Arc
  • Kaiju Fighting Days Arc

Next time, we go all over space, meet new characters, and fight kaiju again in the (for Lack of a better name) 2nd Era of Kaiju Fighting/Bibinba/Planet Rakka arc, See you then...
