Gaming Bits Quickie: Why the Sonic Adventure duology is still (relatively) awesome

In 1997, Sonic was set to release his first 3D outing ever, it had great graphics for the Sega Saturn, but it wasn't meant to be. sonic wasn't meant for the Saturn, and the so called Sonic X-Treme was never released... but Sonic did have sort of a tech demo for the first true 3D outing on the Dreamcast, while it was once praised for it's fast paced 3D gameplay, it was later criticized for being glitchy, the second game was more of the same, just with bad fanfiction like storylines, but was it really that bad?

Basically sonic adventure was the real definition of the Sonic's ASSSSSSSSSS Game, you saw the game from sonic's back. though the camera would go all spastic, which was the game's biggest mistake IMHO... They tried to make scenic imagery but ended up screwing over the game. I would say make it Sega's answer to Crash Bandicoot, but that would make it just as hard to play because you had to have split second timing, though that would've been a better idea. I have to say half the glitches came from the spastic camera. However It was indeed better than other 3D Sonic games *Cough* Sonic 06 and Sonic Boom *Cough*...

The story was also criticized, but at least I prefer bad recolors and fan characters over furry fetishes and DBZ Ripoff stories, DO I EVEN HAVE TO EXPLAIN WHAT I'M REFERRING TO?! Shadow may've been a bad official recolor, but he actually had somewhat of a personality, unlike certain other hedgies, like grey colored ones who will remain nameless, Rouge was kind of a sex object, but sega didn't really fetishize her, the complete opposite of jailbait females who fell in love with the blue blur. Big the Cast kind of was lame, and Sega Preferred you not to remember him, but he was rather harmless, unless he killed your dog, I recommend you STFU about him...

What did this game do right? well it didn't have that many game breaking bugs, unlike later games, it was as fast paced as always, the graphics were better than other 3D platformers at thee time, and the multiple characters were an interesting concept. These games were still relatively experimental just like other 3D platformers of the era. I miss these types of games, I wish we'd all go back to that happier era just for a day next year. The bad stuff was pretty much small potatoes compared to the later 3D Sonic Games. Still these games show how much the gaming landscape has changed. Just look at the review scores for the Gamecube and PS2. The game is indeed flawed, but it's still kind of a good game.

Personally should revisit this game just to see how to do a 3D Sonic Game properly. There have been great 3D Sonic games after this, Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations, Sonic Heroes is sort of one, But it's not that that hard to see why there has been an influx of 2D Sonic Games, Those games have aged better than the 3D games. The whole point of this segment was to show you these games may be a product of they're time, but thanks to multiple factors, these aged better than you think. I don't want to persuade you to like this game, I just want to provide you with a different perspective than the one you had for years.

Closing Statement:

If you have these games on one of it's many available platforms, play it, Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube, PC (Legit or through an emulator), PS3, or 360, play them with fresh eyes, especially if you were a kid who grew up with these games at the time, so yeah that's all I've got to say...
